Work introduction

Berger was 28 when he composed this work for string orchestra, lacking a short coda. The piece was not performed until six years later, when Wilhelm Furtwängler conducted it; the music is so tightly compact that it seems longer than its actual duration (just short of 6 minutes). It is dance-like, buoyant, rich in its variety – it is sure to please on any string-ensemble programme.
