Work introduction
Foerster wrote this piano trio, the second of three, in Hamburg in 1894, at the time when he became friends with Gustav Mahler, who was working there then. The work is in three movements; an outstanding exponent of late Romantic music, its basic temperament is melancholy, likely influenced by the death of the composer’s sister. He was also impressed by a compilation of Lieder by Edvard Grieg, especially Udfarten (“Departures”), the story of a woman who happily follows her husband on his pilgrimage without sensing that Death will be awaiting them along the way.
