Description
La vera costanza was written for Eszterházy’s court; it premiered on 25 April 1779. It was revived there in April 1785; apparently, Haydn was obliged to write down a large part of the opera anew because most of the original had been lost. Between 1786 and 1792 it was performed in Bratislava, Budapest, Vienna and Brno under the title Der flatterhafte Liebhaber (“The Fickle Lover”), as well as in Paris in 1791, where it was called Laurette.
In May 1976, Philips collaborated with the Radio Suisse Romande and the European Broadcasting Union to record the opera for the Brilliant Classics label in 1990, which led to a renaissance.
