Rondo Ostinato

Work introduction

Scored for winds and percussion, this work is dedicated to the Vienna Symphony Orchestra on its 50th jubilee; when it was first performed as part of the Vienna Philharmonic Concerts in 1956, conducted by André Cluytens, the composer made it plain that the piece was not about a “Spanish motif,” but rather “an idea formed in ‘the Spanish style,’ so to speak.”

Prior to its performances in Vienna, Rondo ostinato had already been given elsewhere by famous conductors such as Celibidache and Ernst Bour, with more to come under George Szell and Leopold Stokowski; Berger was at the peak of his career.
