At first, the Nazis vied for Stolz, although he disassociated himself from them. When war broke out, he was in Paris where, in 1939, he was arrested as “an enemy alien” and taken to the internment camp at Colombes.
Thanks to contacts with Yvonne Louise Ulrich, nicknamed Einzi and his subsequent, fifth and last wife, Stolz was freed after three days an emigrated to New York in exile.
