Work introduction
In this, the third part of the cycle, Rihm set König Lear and Der Fremde geht davon, two poems by Peter Huchel (1903-1981), to music. This is late Romantic music in the Mahler tradition, highly dramatic and occasionally dance-like. The score is replete with clearly contoured motifs, i.e. melodies which, in the first poem, distantly recall the Wölfli-Lieder and, in the second, suggest folksongs. The orchestration is unusually colourful, adding to the theatrical qualities of this farewell scene.
