Work introduction
The initial idea of the “Prelude en Re mineur” was to construct an original piece based on an arch-classical theme that one might think was taken from the famous HANON method, well known to pianists.
This theme, built on a descending scale and a pivotal note, will undergo various transformations giving it sometimes a baroque aspect à la Bach, sometimes a very romantic or “film music” aspect…
Part A, baroque, is like a structuring refrain of the piece and will be heard several times. It requires a very precise, very springy left hand and a well-articulated right hand.
With part B, more romantic, there is room for interpretation, for rubato but the initial theme is still there.
At bar 33 and bar 34, the theme from “A Summer of 42” by Michel LEGRAND is hidden in the left hand.
Parts B and C require crossing of hands (indicated * on the score).
The CODA built on the first 4 notes of the theme is a memory of RAVEL's Concerto in G.
