Description
In the tradition of the ancient Concerto Grosso, this work places a solo group of flutes against a larger ensemble, also of flutes. The preferred performance is with a combined group of approximately 20 players, but it may be performed with a minimum of nine. The concertino group in any case consists of a solo quintet or quartet: piccolo, C-flute, alto flute, bass flute, and optional contrabass. The ripieno group is in five parts, any or all of which may be reinforced with multiple players.
It was written for a special occasion, a premiere at the National Flute Association Convention in 2016 in San Diego, California. The "dream" ripieno group consisted of the Los Angeles Philharmonic flute section (Sarah Jackson, Denis Bouriakov, Catherine Ransom-Karoly, Elise Shope-Henry) plus contrabass flutist Peter Sheridan, with the NFA Professional Flute Choir conducted by Clyde Mitchell.
Since the Solo Contrabass Flute part is optional, it is offered below as Additional Material, a free download.
