Description
This work was composed for students on the pre-professional music course at South Downs College in Hampshire UK. It was written as an alternative to Vivaldi's concerto in C major for the same instrumentation. The first, and longest movement is written in ritornello form and is rhythmic and energetic - the flutes generally play together here, though there are solo moments for each player. Its second movement is short and very lightly scored, flute I carries the florid melodic material in the first half with flute II taking over for the second half. The final movement it lively and fugal, its dance-like passages for flutes take the form of episodes between the fugally based ritornelli. It's first performance was in 1995, with minor revisions for subsequent performances in 2009 and 2010. The musical idiom is tonal with approachable gently dissonant harmonies.
