Description
The Canti da Pessoa reveal an intimate and evocative world with minimal brush strokes. They lose the sound of Pessoa's original Portuguese language and acquire the sound of Italian, the language in which Riccardi, after having chosen these fragments, translated, varied and reassembled them. The results are an inevitable overlapping of two identities and personalities.
The lyrics provide possible settings in which the three singers live, almost as onstage characters, as they interpret the cycle. The allusive meanings of the texts and the rarefied mood of the music pose a challenge for a director or video artist who may want to impose his own creativity on the action, to whatever extent we can speak about “action.” The work is also challenging for the musicians: two sopranos, bass, clarinet, violin and cello.
Riccardi says of these songs: “At the end of the eighties I discovered the poetry of Fernando Pessoa and found it inspiring. I began selecting fragments that most appealed to me from several of his poems. The resulting cycle engaged me throughout the decade from 1991 to 2004, with some long pauses. It is representative of the transition between my earlier compositions and my more recent works.”
