Description
The term Armáta refers to the Cretan folk tradition of belling sheep flocks and
goat herds with specific tunings, unique to each aggregate. Besides its aesthetic
value, individual Armata helps shepherds identify their group of animals.
The opening and closing sections of this piece features bronze goat bells
(kypri) and copper sheep bells (koudhounta). A middle section uses the additive
meter 3223.
8
Glockenspiel may be used in place of goart bells. A marimba may substitute
for sheep bells. A large tambourine and large tom may be used instead of the
doira and dombak.
Armata was written and premiered by the University of Nebraska Chamber Orch.,
Emile Alaus, conductor.
