Description
Composer's note: This work was inspired by a visit to the exhibition of the Jonas Netter Collection at the Pinacothèque de Paris in June 2012. The paintings were organized by rooms, and the star attractions for me were those of Amedeo Modigliani, Maurice Utrillo, and Chaim Soutine. The three movements of Tableaux represent the general characters of the three painters rather than specific paintings, the work of Modligliani being stylized and somewhat melancholy, that of Utrillo very orderly and detail-oriented (at least when viewed from a distance), while Soutine’s paintings feature aggressive splashes of wild colors and moods, by far the least consistent and predictable of the three.
The premiere took place the following year at the rarescale 10th Anniversary Concert in London, with Carla Rees - bass flute and David Black - guitar.
