Description
The Divertimento for violin, violoncello and piano is dedicated to Dr. Ewald Kropfitsch, the father of the three Kropfitsch-siblings who form the Jess-Trio-Vienna. The opus is therefore closely linked to his person.
The opus consists of four parts, which transition into one another. As usual in other compositions, the latters of a name - here of the dedicatee - is referred to throughout the different parts. Accordingly, the first part (Allegro risoluto) only uses the notes „E-A-D“, derived from the name “Ewald”. In the second part (Andantino tranquillo), the notes „F-Fis-C-H“ are added (derived from the dedicatee’s last name „Kropfitsch“). In combination with the notes from the first part, they form a unique scale which serves as the thematic foundation for the rest of the composition.
At the end of the third part (Intermezzo romantico), two short adaptations of Carinthian Folksongs point towards the ancestry of the Kropfitsch family in Carinthia. The fourth part (Allegretto scherzando energico) concludes the opus in a lively and almost jazzy fashion.
