Description
Suites of Dances were a very popular form during the Baroque. Nearly every composer wrote in this style, and some, such as J.S. Bach wrote some of their greatest music. For a 21st century equivelant, I kept the basic concept, but replaced the Minuets, Gavottes and Gigues with more modern dances. The work starts with a brief Sanctus, asking for a blessing upon our endeveaurs, The first dance is a Fandango, not a particularly modern form, but rare during the baroque other than from Bocherinni. The 2nd dance isn't a real dance at all, but a solo showcase for the oboe. Inspired by imagining Brunhild doing a seduction, she dances a "Viking Veil Dance". Next comes a popular dance that was all the rage in the 1920's, the "Charleston". Here we take a brief pause for a fashion statement where each player in the orchestra dons a hat, each trying to outdo each other in being more outlandish. A "Rap" follows with complex polyrhythms and the Oboe and English Horn imitatting spoken words. Next the English Horn is featured in a polyonesian dance from the south seas, the Hula, complete with swaying palm trees, some unexpected singing, and your favorite beverage. The final movement starts as a Polka, but it appears the English Hornist enjoyed his beverage a little too much, and he keeps getting lost and entering in the wrong key! Everything falls apart, until the music starts over, this time with the Polka theme presented as a Vienesse Waltz. The Waltz becomes a fugue and as it becomes more and more complex, eventually each of the previous dances reappears and it becomes clear that all of the dances were actually built out out of the same pair of motifs. This is meant to get your audience laughing, and previous performances have made an impact. I recently had a work played by an orchestra that have performed many of my pieces over the years, and lseveral audience members remembered this piece.
