Description
The four movements are: Praeludium con brio, Scherzo Capriccio, Passacaglia, and Joyant Discourse. The work is neo-classical in both form and style. The first movement replicates the traditional sonata-allegro form as the two different themes are stated, developed, and then recapped. The second movement Scherzo is a short and fast work in which the organ and bassoon dialogue back-and-forth in a playful manner sandwiched around a more lyrical middle section. The bassoon states the subject of the third movement Passacaglia, followed by eight variations of the theme that include different tone colors of the organ as well as meter and rhythmic changes. The final movement is essentially a rondo with the main theme returning after each sub-section quotes a theme from a previous movement. The entire sonata ends with the same theme that was stated in the beginning.
