Description
The piece is inspired by the poem “Sitting along on Mount Jingting” written by Chinese poet Li Bai during the Tang Dynasty. Despite the extreme conciseness of the poem, it expresses the profound soulfulness of the poet and his meditative connection with nature. Birds and clouds symbolize the flowing phenomena of time in association with the mind and subsequently only the mountain remains, merging with the lonely awareness and consciousness of the poet. Throughout the piece, the contrasted materials of two layers interact and merge together with subtle transformation. The flute part symbolizes the motional birds and clouds whereas the tuba part metaphorizes the mountain with the poet’s loneliness.
Li Bai 699-762
Sitting Alone on Jingting Mountain
A flock of birds have vanished down the sky.
Now the last cloud drains away.
We sit together, the mountain and me,
until only the mountain remains.
