Description
These four pieces are not related to each other in any way, so this collection does not form a suite or a sonata. Each piece is independent of the others. The pieces are titled, "Soliloquy," "Double Fugue," "Passacaglia," and "Rondo Capriccio," and the titles of the works speak for themselves. The Soliloquy represents someone speaking their quiet thoughts out loud. The Double Fugue has two separate subjects. The clarinet introduces the first one at the beginning, and the flute announces the the second one half way through the piece. They are then played together toward the end. The Passacaglia's theme is heard ten times beginning with the cello, and each variation is eight measures long and separated with two measure interludes. A two-measure coda at the end brings the total number of measures of the work to an even hundred. The final Rondo Capriccio has a gallant, jovial, bouncy theme that repeats three times in different variations. The duration for the entire set is about seventeen minutes.
