Description
Les Nymphéas (l'ensemble de l'Orangerie) was inspired by the grandest of Monet's series of paintings entitled Nymphéas (Water Lilies), the group installed permanently in the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris. The overwhelming size, color, and subtlety of these masterpieces is reflected in the dense, sonorous harmonies and plays of light and color in the music. The two original versions, one for string orchestra and one for symphonic band, were commissioned by the Irvine Valley College Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, Dr. Stephen Rochford - Conductor. The version for clarinet choir was created the following year. The deep and unified sonority of the clarinet choir gives the work a completely new palette of sounds.
It is scored for 8 B-flat clarinets, alto clarinet in E-flat (with alternate part included for basset horn in F), 3 bass clarinets in B-flat, and contra-alto clarinet in E-flat and/or contrabass clarinet in B-flat.
