Description
After silently depressing a six note chord and engaging the sostenuto pedal (ii), the
piece begins with an ascending arpeggio containing notes of a combined natural
and melodic minor scale, These and related pitches ring sympathetically throughout
much of the first section. Measures with repeats are to be reiterated ab libitum, around
3 to 5 times.
The second half of the piece consist of 8 variations on Tarantella Napolitana, the best
know example of the form. A coda recalls some of the music from pthe first part.
Lycosa Taratula was written in 1986 for Larry Lusk, founding Dean of the University
of Nebraska College of Fine and Performing Arts.
