Description
Meditacions sobre un motiu de Mompou (Meditations on a Mompou Motif) is a work commissioned by the Palau de la Musica Catalana on the occasion of the figure of guest composer for the 2013/2014 season. It has been recorded by several pianists such as Yukiko Akagi, Marcel Worms or Jordi Masó.
Meditacions sobre un motiu de Mompou is a work that has as its central element the harmonic sonority of the opening motif of the XVIII piece of Musica callada by Frederic Mompou. The work is structured in three linked meditative movements. The treatment of time is circular, and the motif is presented from different angles and transformations, as if a musical prism turned on itself.
The first meditation introduces a concatenation of chords modulated by a gesture of loss of strength. The second meditation sets forth the motif in the form of semitone dyads of crystalline sonority. The third meditation highlights the contrast that occurs between slinky bursts of scales and arpeggios that cross the harmonic region of the motif and that generate resonances from the harmony.
The end of the work allows the option of linking with the XVIII piece of Musica callada by Frederic Mompou, as a culmination of the three meditative processes. Musica callada contains a very deep expression and, by placing it at the end of the work, there is no need to add more music than the silence itself.
Meditacions sobre un motiu de Mompou is a work commissioned by the Palau de la Musica Catalana on the occasion of the figure of guest composer for the 2013/2014 season. The work is dedicated to the sisters of the Comunitat Filipense de Barcelona.
