Description
The text of My otdokhnjom (We shall rest) is taken from Sonya’s monologue in the closing scene of Anton Chekhov’s famous play Uncle Vanya (1898), as used in Sergei Rachmaninov’s Op. 26 n. 3; it is Rachmaninov's setting rather than the Chekhovian drama to which the present piece primarily alludes. My otdokhnjom is part of the larger on-going cycle Lauda and Litany of “dialogues” with spiritual-existential classics of the voice and piano repertoire (Schubert, Brahms, Wolf, Mahler, Rachmaninov, Poulenc...).
Peter Bannister, September 2022
My` otdoxnyom! My` usly`shim angelov,
My` uvidim vsyo nebo v almazax,
My` uvidim, kak vsyo zlo zemnoe,
Vse nashi stradaniya potonut v miloserdii,
Kotoroe napolnit soboyu ves` mir,
I nasha zhizn` stanet tixoyu,
nezhnoyu, sladkoyu, kak laska.
Ya veruyu, veruyu...
My` otdoxnyom... My` otdoxnyom.
We shall rest! We shall hear the angels,
We shall see all heaven in diamonds,
We shall see how all earthly evil,
All our sufferings will drown in mercy,
Which will cover the whole earth,
And our life will become peaceful,
Tender and sweet, like a caress.
I believe, I believe…
We shall rest… we shall rest.
