Description
This work aims to bring an elaborate but traditional symphonic form to the genre of the percussion ensemble. Each of the eight players has only two or three instruments, so the logistical demands are modest. It is designed to be performed using one vibraphone and one marimba, each shared between two players.
The five main sections comprising the piece should be indicated in the program as they are in the score:
I – Allegro moderato; Introduction and Exposition
II – Scherzo meccanico: clock shop
I – Allegro moderato; Development
III – Power Chorale
I – Allegro moderato; Recapitulation and Coda
It was premiered in October of 2010 by the Crane Percussion Ensemble of the State University of New York, Potsdam, conducted by James Petercsak, who has been a great supporter of the composer over many years.
Other groups have performed it since, including the Percussion Ensemble of the University of Texas, Arlington, conducted by Michael Varner, whose fine interpretation is video-linked below.
