Description
According to Greek mythology, the straits of Messina, off the coast of Sicily,
posed a difficult test for mariners, for it presented two equally hazardous
alternatives: Scylla, a nine-headed monster turned into a rock by Circe, and
Charybdis, a deadly whirlpool. This music was designed as two friendly virtuosic
test pieces for double bass and percussion.
Scylla consists of three sections. The opening presents the protagonists in adversary
roles, alternating nervous and abrupt gestures before arriving a unison rhythm
The next part, nine variations, each 27 beats in length, provides the most difficult
test of Scylla. The last section uses dramatic, isolated unison riffs.
By contrast, Charybdis pairs the timpani with the bass in mostly shared gestures in
strict tempi, at times suggestive of a 1970s jazz-rock groove.
Much of this bass writing calls for quickly changing arco, pizz; col legno textures.
The percussion part, although strictly notated, attempts at simulating a jazz-like
improvisatory feel.
Scylla and Charybdis was composed in 1982 for Rusty White and Al Rometo.
