Description
SHEHUO for 12 instrumentalists Op.17 (1991)
Shehuo is an old Chinese performing tradition, intended as a ritual of thanksgiving for the gods. According to ancient custom it took place in front of a temple or on an open-air stage in the countryside. Its content was usually based on historic tales. Those who participated in the Shehuo ritual generally paid more attention to its relaxing and entertaining side than to its sacred elements, so that performances were characteristically held in a somewhat rambunctious atmosphere. This was partly why Shehuo enjoyed such popularity.
