Description
"Soliloquia" by Katarzyna Brochocka is a five-movement piece for solo double bass. Each part is a reflection on a selected fragment of the New Testament. The top four relate to pericopes from the Gospel according to St. st. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and Part V relates to the Book of Revelation. It should be noted, however, that the purpose here is not to illustrate the biblical text - we are not dealing with program music - but to meditate on the words of Scripture.
The soliloquy (soliloquium) is - as it follows from the definition - a stage conversation with oneself, a kind of inner monologue whose purpose is to define one's attitude. Hence the need to find or create a certain space of solitude, ascetic concentration, and renunciation of unnecessary things, ie to go into the desert. Exit to confront oneself, to find oneself, and thus to determine one's relationship with God, the world, and other people. For it is only from the distance that this isolation offers that the correct hierarchy of values can be seen more clearly.
This is undoubtedly a difficult experience, as is shown by the fate of the heroes of the pericopes that served as inspiration for individual fragments of the composition - the drowning fast of Peter, a woman who has been ill for years and tries to grab a piece of The Cloak of Jesus, a man possessed by a legion of evil spirits, or the wailing Mary Magdalene, who at first does not recognize the risen Lord. However, the finale of the work leads to the conclusion that it is worthwhile and deserves constant effort.
