Description
Composer's note: Sonata for Four Timpani, with bongos and suspended cymbal, was written in 1999. Beyond the elusive aim of trying to create an engaging piece of music, there were also two special goals. First of all, I was intrigued by the idea of applying 4-mallet technique to timpani, in the first movement even using a hard mallet and a soft mallet in each hand. Second, I wanted to build a traditional four-movement structure, but at the same time minimizing as much as possible the usual breaks for changing pitches, changing mallets, and even to some extent the pauses between movements and for turning pages -- in other words, to keep the musical flow as continuous as possible throughout the course of the work.
