Description
This quintet consists of three movements of approximately eleven
minutes in duration. After a veiled opening leading to a climactic
high C# in the trumpet, the music becomes more lyrical, focusing
on the horn before the music revisits the previous intensity. The
piece segues to the 2nd movement, "tuba mirum", dominated by tuba
cadenzas.The last movement is subtitled "Lai of the Lounge Lizard".
In this movement, the raspy, sleazy sound of the trombone playing
straight mute, predominates. Much of this movement alternates 2/4
with 9/16 meters.
This music was written for the Nebraska Brass, Dean Heist, director.
