Description
This Joyous work has always been one of my favorites! The lyrical gentleness of the first movement gives way briefly in the slow movement to darker clouds, but the jovial saunter of the Finale brushes all gloom away in a headlong rush to a final, broad sweeping statement of the opening motive. Constructed in a tonal language, the work is economical in its use of material, with a few motivic elements used as building blocks for all three movements.
Sonata for Viola and Piano was writen as a thank you to Steven Wedell, Violist with the Columbus Symphony Orchestraduring my final years as a cellist with the orchestra. Significant performances include Aarron Mossberg, former principal Violist with the Rochester Philharmonic, currently a member of the Pittsburg Symphony, and Steven Wedell. Over the years it has been championed by Brett Allen, Asst. Principal Viola, also with the Columbus Symphony. A recording featuring Brett with the composer at the piano will be released in 2023.
