Focus: Johann Strauß

As many of you know, in 2025 the music world celebrates the 200th birthday of the Viennese composer Johann Strauß, also known as the "King of the Waltz". After Joseph Lanner and Johann Strauß Vater, it was he who contributed significantly to the further development of the Viennese waltz and the Viennese operetta, and thus had an enormous influence on the Viennese musical tradition. Since then, the music of the Strauß dynasty has been regarded as a flagship, as evidenced by the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert, which is broadcast worldwide.

Furthermore, the music of Johann Strauß has always been an important source of inspiration for other composers as well, and so arrangements by Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg and Anton Webern, as well as Cristóbal Halffter and Wolfgang Rihm, were created. Nikolai Badinski, for example, encountered the famous Strauß operetta Die Fledermaus in a surrealistic way in his work The Intoxicated Bat.

On the occasion of the upcoming anniversary, we would therefore like to invite you to submit works in which you felt inspired by Strauß, his music or his zeitgeist.
