Description
There are many arguments and theories surrounding the exact origin and genuineness of the Shroud of Turin. The fact is that the burial cloth with the face of a person, allegedly Christ, has become one of Christianity’s most important relics. It can be traced back to the 14th century precisely; before that, its story is all lacunae and speculation. Preserved in Turin since 1578, the shroud likely found its way there via Aleppo, Constantinople, Cyprus, Paris, Lirey and Chambery. It is the puzzle’s path which inspired Arvo Pärt to create a new work, commissioned by Enzo Restagno and his Turin music festival Settembre Musica Torino.
La Sindone for orchestra and percussion was premiered on 15 February 2006 in Turin Cathedral, played by the Estonian National Symphony led by Estonian conductor Olari Elts. The premiere concert took place as one of the ceremonial events at the Turin Winter Olympics.
