Work introduction
A Tempo was written for the ensemble TEMPO, of which the composer is a co-founder. The instrumentation, sometimes referred to as "Pierrot Plus," is becoming more and more common: flute, clarinet, violin, violoncello, percussion, and piano -- though in this case including doublings (piccolo and bass clarinet).
It was premiered by TEMPO in Los Angeles with the composer conducting in 2012, then later performed by Brightwork newmusic.
As is the case with several of the composer's other works, it includes brief optional opportunities for improvisation.
