Work introduction
A series of personal postcards:
I. One summer in Italy, I was hired to amuse, on a daily basis, 8-9 children whose language (Swiss dialect) I did not speak, while their parents were immersed in a therapy retreat. The entertainment consisted mostly of excursions to the beach, with stops en route for picnics in olive groves and consuming gelato in town. The summer passed as a silent movie might, with plenty of comic action and only an occasional word understood by all. ‘Bambini’ could serve as a soundtrack to that movie.
II. ‘Island in the Night’ speaks of a quiet restlessness without destination, an experience of shifting colors in an unfamiliar terrain, and the rhythmic waves of a sea beneath moon and stars.
III. I was once given a lengthy ride, hitch-hiking from Basel to Paris, by two men who were ‘off to join the circus’ in Belgium, abandoning their prior lives. They were charming and persuasive, and I had the brief fantasy of joining them, rather than continuing on to Paris.
IV. ‘Slow Voyage Across the Mid-Heavens’: The melody occurred to me, in gradual increments, over the course of a long train ride when I was half-asleep. I seemed no longer to be on a train but in some transport beyond my ordinary sense of being or of distance. The music was persistent, and I finally wrote it down.

Percussion requires 2 players (1: Timpani & Bass Drum, Cymbals, 2: Snare Drum, Glockenspiel, and other percussion instruments).
Movement III includes a brief violin solo, notated in the Violin I part.
