Work introduction
Babel for piano is one of the movements of "Passages," Michael Shapiro's compendium of piano works based on Biblical inspirations.
Babel conjures up the building of a monolith by people whose tongues are so varied that they cannot communicate with each other. This work is therefore a parable about the inability of people to converse and also their failure to hear what the other is saying. It is a call for mutual comprehension and understanding.
