Work introduction
Chants and Echoes is originally for six or more horns, but adapts beautifully for Trombone Ensemble. Trombone V may be Bass; Trombone VI should be Bass. Accidentals are valid for the entire measure, but only in the indicated octave. Many additional signs have been included for clarity.
The work is in a single movement; however, the main idea, for the full ensemble, is punctuated by three brief contrasting sections: a Trio (Trombones IV, V & VI) at measure 58, a Duet (Trombones II & III) at measure 85, and an accompanied Solo (Trombone I) at measure 122. If a larger ensemble is used, these three passages should be played one on a part.
The indication, "During this time, listen carefully to the two tones, balancing and 'tuning' them," appears at measures 3, 179, 183, and 186. The goal here is to make a special effort so that the major second (E-flat and F) is perceived as much as possible as a single sound. This sonority is used as a point of arrival and repose throughout the piece.
