Work introduction
This is the first published critical edition of the famous piece Catalani wrote in 1878 for the world exposition in Paris (conducted by Franco Faccio). It takes into account the autograph manuscript as well as the performance material Ricordi used for performances after he had acquired Lucca publishing house. In fact the original manuscript bears many differences in order of orchestration than the version everybody knows and performs. There is no evidence that these changes were made with the approval of the young Catalani (rather by Faccio's hand, himself being a quite famous composer at the time) which didn't went again on his score before dying of tuberculosis in 1893. He was deeply admired by Toscanini and this short but significant piece we found all the aspects of his music, returned to a clean and musicologically informed text.
