Work introduction
This volume of sheet music contains a small selection of solo works written by the composer for guitar. There are five sonatinas in the following keys: G major, F sharp minor, F major, A major and A minor.
In contrast to a sonata, sonatinas were originally aimed at amateurs and were often used as teaching literature, as they were intended to be easy to understand and play. Opus 35 by Frank Knabben was in fact written for teaching purposes and is aimed, as far as the technical aspect is concerned, at diligent beginners, advanced pupils and also candidates for artistic postgraduate studies. Sonatinas 1 and 3 are in three movements, the others in two. Stylistically, there are echoes of the Baroque, Viennese Classicism and Romanticism; in addition, the composer manages to build a bridge to the guitar music of South America. This mixture sounds extremely appealing and is typical of Frank Knabben's style, who likes to combine old and new styles in his guitar works.
