Work introduction
De profundis was premiered by the Escolania de Montserrat directed by Bernat Vivancos at the Musica Antiqua Europae Orientalis International Festival of Early Music 2012 in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
De profundis has been written in response to the request by Bernat Vivancos, director of the Escolania de Montserrat choir, for a new work that will be added to the repertoire of offertories for monastery Masses. It was premiered during the Autumn 2012 concert tour, including performances at the Musica Antiqua Europae Orientalis International Festival of Early Music in Bydgoszcz (Poland), Barcelona, Vila-seca, Valls and Badalona.
De profundis is based on a cycle of resonant chords in the mid-low register which represents the depths of the abyss and, at the same time, provides the underlying musical breath. Above it, the melody is carried by the soprano voice which floats, driven by the energy of the breathing.
