Work introduction
The present work is one of several duets which the composer wrote in the early 1980s for very different instrumentations.
The clarinet and flute harmonise very well with each other, the sound is well-balanced
and the common range is remarkable. The work enriches the literature with an interesting variation, as there are very few compositions in this instrumentation.
There are mainly two musical parameters that dominate the short, three-movement work: Rhythm and chromaticism. The two equal instruments interact frequently in small intervals and through changing voice leading. Short harmonic motifs are performed as a dialogue, different rhythmic accents compete against each other or form the common basis for notated improvisations.
One gets the impression that the composer has compressed the originally longer planned work into six intense minutes of music.
The Duettino is also available in a version for two flutes.
