Värmland is a rural area in Sweden; its many lakes and folksongs are associated with the world of Gösta Berling, the main character in Selma Lagerlöf’s first work. The Värmlandsrhapsodie was written between 20 and 28 October 1933 for her 75th birthday.
Together with a number of other folk melodies, the so-called Värmland Lied is quoted and reworked, beginning with the slow, wistful first part, then in the following fast, dance-like section, before the piece fades away, slow and nostalgic again.
