Work introduction
There are a series of places – magical places – full of experiences, which remain floating or flaming inside the memory. Floating islands of memory that at some point will become music. This archipelago, emerging little by little in the form of piano works inspired by places in Andalusia, vibrates in the state of flamenco styles inherent to each island. Years ago, I composed "Jerez desde el aire o al aire de Jerez", a piece in which the whirlwinds of notes move or dance to the beat of 'bulería', a typical style of this city of Cadiz. In the same way, this new work has germinated as a superposition of powerful images that I keep of Granada. This Alhambra is an interior place that gradually lights up with the memories that emerge almost in dreams of the Alhambra building, of the many visits, of the great flamenco-singer Enrique Morente singing Granaínas, of Lorca, of friends, of powerful poetic ties. Metaphorically, we could say that a kind of mysterious descending staircase, in the form of scales on harmonic spectra, leads us to a pulse, to a rhythm, which opens the staging of a mysterious 7-voice canon, wich leads to a 'Granaínas' song. From there, we ascend to a place in the mountain wich one can see from the Alhambra. That place is none other than the reflection of the sunlight that bathes the peaks of the Sierra Nevada. Eastern sun inside the memory. Work commissioned by CNDM. First performance by Juan Carlos Garvayo at MNCARS in Madrid/Spain on 28 february 2022-
