Già la notte d'intorno (Opus 1)Orchestration: for female voice and seven instruments
Type: Dirigierpartitur
Written in 1973, Surrounded by the night is the first work in Riccardi's catalogue, his Opus 1. This piece for soprano, flute, clarinet, guitar and string quartet is based on a text by Filippo Candiani and was revised in 1990. It is a single slow movement that oscillates between Adagio con grazia and Un poco meno, concluding even more slowly. A woman awaits her beloved--or dwells on the memory of her beloved--and even holds her breath for fear of being heard. But in her sleep she speaks to him and dreams of dawn.
