Work introduction
"For Anna-Maria, wanting to hear this beautiful music from her hands...!"
In the monographic album «Resplendences around Bach» (2018), with my creative work for the piano, the Bachian influence is a common denominator: After dealing with the original material of the Ciaccona and developing the Bach topic in my Danza, Escena & Joropo, I took the listener to my own creative territory, where the imprint of the famous ‘Thomaskantor’ exists, but it’s much less perceptible. Then, I was interested again to place the great Baroque Master at the forefront of the dramaturgical context of the proposed recital. Moreover, after the cinematic end of the Joropo in ‘A major’, I wanted to create a sound contrast of calmness with the ‘A minor’ of the chorale prelude Ich ruf' zu Dir, Herr Jesu Christ (I call to You, Lord Jesus Christ), a beautiful piece originally conceived for organ, which for its brevity and conciseness works excellently as an interlude.
I started from the lowest register of the piano to motivate the acoustic illusion of the organ. Appealing to a metaphysical musical symbolism, I also wanted to underline the idea of a ‘believing in something’, which finds a beginning and end in the depths of our conviction.
I have recreated the beginning of the work by completing the first measure and have adopted a beautiful solution, proposed by Ferruccio Busoni, by repeating the last measures of the work, although the musical treatment and the instrumental approach that guides me through the whole realization of the adaptation is absolutely different from that of the Italian musician.
My Ich ruf' zu Dir ends also in the lowest register of the piano and it’s not a mere coincidence that, in addition, I call the tonal function of a ‘dominant’, which establishes a connection - its resolution - towards the next work on the Album: The Place of the Resplendences.
