Work introduction
To Anna-Maria...for the delight of every Moment of Beauty!
Ludovicus and the Allegories of the Sea (2019) metaphorically traces Beethoven's yearning and humanistic spirit. Ludovicus - the Latin form of the German name Ludwig - symbolises the view on Beethoven filtered through an intercultural, Ibero-American background. Quotations from different creative moments of the composer (including his sixth & seventh symphonies, the Sonata Pathétique, Piano Trio Op. 70 No. 1 ‘Ghost’) appear here and there throughout the compositional discourse. Likewise, Schumann, Brahms, Mozart and Bach leave their fine traces: “Not brook [in German: Bach], but sea should he be called”, commented Beethoven, very impressed about the “Forefather of Harmony” - the great musical reference of all characters involved.
The work was conceived especially for Anna-Maria Maak’s piano recital ‘Beethovens Geist’ (Beethoven's Spirit) and has an integrating role between intense and contrasting moments of lyricism and virtuosity, supporting the dramaturgy of the programme, which goes beyond the chronology of occurrences to transform all into a metaphor: the art of all times appeals to us. This way, the result is surprising and moving until the very end...!
Premiered by pianist Anna-Maria Maak on December 14th, 2019 as part of the Germany-wide initiative ‘Beethoven bei uns’.
Recorded on Anna-Maria Maak’s concept album ‘In the Secret of the World’ | Label Florentyn Music (Catalogue number: FM-CD 2101)
