Work introduction
3 musical impressions from the Mediterranean region are the basis of this composition, which is dedicated to the Italian flutist Luisa Sello:
(1) Sea: At the beginning, people's longing to get to the seaside is expressed- and then the arrival: A wave is building up, coming closer, spreading out over the flat expanse of the beach, and is retreating again in a countermovement, just as the next wave is approaching and the same cycle is repeated. Then, the at times uneven rocking of a boat on the waves is the focus of attention, until the theme from the beginning is repeated.
(2) Heat: The oppressive sensation owed to the midday heat is reflected in this part. Nature is athirst, the asphalt is shimmering, steps are slow and heavy, no shade is in sight and each breath is difficult.
(3) Evening: The evening is bringing refrigeration though: A theme of 4 bars sounds in descending time-lags by whole tones, symbolising the setting sun. Imbedded are various bird songs, as well as the interrupting cooing of a pigeon. Eventually, the 4-bar-theme is replayed from the reverse in ascending time-lags by whole tones, symbolising the rising moon. A flutist's dance-rhythms are interspersed, until they fade into the night.
