Work introduction
On September 29, 1918, the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale (L'Histoire du Soldat) took place, a fascinating work for a septet consisting of Clarinet in A/Bb, Bassoon, Cornet in A/Bb, Trombone, Violin, Double Bass and Percussion. This unusual orchestration shaped the performances and made the piece a masterpiece of chamber music that still holds significant musical importance today.
However, many performances of the piece lack additional compositions that use this specific instrumentation. To address this, Peer Baierlein has arranged five well-known classical works for the same ensemble. The percussion part is either supplemented by vibraphone or marimba and the Cornet in A/Bb is replaced with a Trumpet in C/Bb. In some pieces, a Flugelhorn is also used.
With this cycle, Baierlein offers an expanded performance series that honors the tradition of Stravinsky’s instrumentation in The Soldier’s Tale while simultaneously opening up new perspectives.
