Work introduction
In 2004, Rihm again turned to his piece entitled Chiffre, enlarging the scoring by several instruments and composing the material anew. The result was a kind of piano concerto, although the instrumentation list bears only the word “solo” after naming the piano. Its voice, however, is more comprehensive and its technique more demanding than in the other Chiffre pieces; the other instruments in the ensemble must repeatedly master virtuosic passages, especially the flute and the oboe. The music is often hectic, with several points of calm.
