Composed by John Francis Wade in 1744 in Latin, this piece was later translated by Frederick Oakeley in 1841. In the 18th century further additional texts were added, by various anonymous writers, compiling it a total of 9 set of verses. In this arrangement, the composer uses the first seven texts, in which the first four belonged to John Francis Wade.
