Work introduction
This piece is the transcription for string Quintet of 2 parts of "AU NOM DE LA LIBERTE...", fresco for choir, orchestra and narrator on the French Revolution, composed in 1989 and in the process of being published (see www.philippemabboux.com).
The Prelude, very energetic and breathless, describes the flight of King Louis XVI stopped at Varennes. It is played at a sustained, very regular tempo with a very marked, almost mechanical accentuation.
The Fugue is the finale of the work. She is built on the 3 words "LIBERTE, EGALITE, FRATERNITE", motto of FRANCE.
Unlike the Prelude, it allows a lot of nuances, phrasing and the interpretation will have to give it a full and powerful side.
The 2 parts can be played separately.
The work is also available from Universal Edition in a version for string orchestra.
