Work introduction
Rise
is structured around a relentless eight-note ostinato played by the marimba. This skeletal
thread, initially presented as a 22-note pattern, based in part on the Japanese Hirajoshi
mode, functions as a pitch feeder for the rest of the ensemble, which double, anticipate.
or expand its harmonic implications. Each reiteration of this music rises in range, transposed
up a fifth. This relentless music is interrupted four times by misterioso “night music",
featuring an ethereal vibraphone melody played against a flickering, tremolo background.
In opposite trajectories, the ostinato sections evolve towards softer, less active music,
while the interludes increase in activity. The concluding descending Coda returns to
the spirit of the opening.
