Work introduction
Ritual Cadences derives much of its design from traditional
Korean music. It is in two contrasting movements. The first
emphasiesing nuanced surface detail with timbral variety and tempi
organized with metric modulations. The opening gesture references
the stylized opening of Korean court music. The second half is based on
traditional Korean rhythmic patterns (Changdans). used in the
second half of the Sanjo, one of ttheir most important instrumental
genres. They include the moderate 12 beat pattern Chinjungmori,
the 10, beat Utmori, and the fast 12 beat Chajinmori.
Ritual Cadences was written for Joseph Holmquist.
